A water based variant on the folk tradition of the Corn Dolly. Unlike her harvest orientated sister however, Madonna of the Shells is not a seasonal marker but a continuous beacon. She holds memory which offers access to the stories and voices held within her myriad shell adornments, and to the adventures the old jewellery components travelled on. She weaves these into a progressive fresh rendering that gives strength to both individual and community. Over her heart she wears an organ stop which says ‘Dolce’ which I discovered in the ruins of the chapel in my old, condemned and boarded up school. Madonna of the Shells holds power softly.
